Stop Paying to Light Rooms the Sun Should Be Lighting for Free

Some rooms in your home just never get enough natural light. The hallway that feels like a cave during the day. The bathroom with no external window. The central living area that sits under the roofline with no way for daylight to reach it. You end up running lights all day, every day, and it adds up on your power bill without you even noticing.

It's not just the cost. Dark rooms feel smaller, stuffier, and less comfortable. Bathrooms and laundries without natural ventilation trap moisture and create the perfect conditions for mould. And relying on artificial light all day when you live on the Sunshine Coast, where the sun is out most of the year, just doesn't make sense.

A well-placed skylight changes all of that. Natural daylight floods in from the roof, lights up the room, and you flick the switch off. It's one of the simplest and cheapest long-term ways to reduce your electricity consumption, improve air quality, and make your home feel bigger and more comfortable.

Troy from Hinter Air has been installing skylights on the Sunshine Coast for 19 years and he'll tell you exactly which rooms will benefit most and which skylight type suits your roof.

What we do

We Install Redilight, Edmonds & Velux Skylights on the Sunshine Coast

Redilight Solar-Powered Skylights

Redilight is Troy’s go-to option when a traditional skylight isn’t practical. A rooftop solar panel captures sunlight and powers LED light fittings inside the home, delivering bright natural-looking light without major roof modifications.

Ideal for multi-level homes, complex rooflines, hallways, bathrooms and internal rooms where conventional skylights aren’t possible. Available in multiple sizes and colour temperatures to suit different spaces.

Edmonds Tube Skylights

For traditional tube skylights that channel natural daylight directly from the roof into the room below, Troy recommends Edmonds. With over 80 years of Australian manufacturing experience, Edmonds skylights are built for harsh local conditions.

Available in a range of sizes for bathrooms, hallways, laundries and open-plan living areas. Designed to maximise daylight while reducing the need for artificial lighting during the day.

Edmonds Skylight Ventilators

Edmonds Skylight Ventilators combine natural daylight with passive roof ventilation in a single product. They brighten the room below while helping remove hot, stale air and excess moisture from the roof cavity.

Ideal for bathrooms, laundries and kitchens where both natural light and improved ventilation can make a noticeable difference to comfort and air quality.

Velux Skylights

Velux is known for premium fixed, opening and solar-powered skylights that bring natural light into bedrooms, living areas and architectural spaces. They are a popular choice for renovations and new builds.

Troy can supply and install the right Velux model for your home, helping you choose the best size, style and operation method to suit your space and budget.

The Best Rooms in Your Home for a Skylight

Some rooms benefit from a skylight more than others. These are the areas where natural light can completely change how your home looks and feels.

Hallways and corridors

One well-positioned skylight can brighten an entire hallway, reducing the need for artificial lighting and making the home feel more open.

Bathrooms and ensuites

A skylight ventilator provides natural light while helping remove moisture, making bathrooms brighter, fresher and more comfortable.

Kitchens

Natural light above the kitchen bench improves visibility, reduces reliance on artificial lighting and makes the space feel larger.

Open-plan living areas

Bringing natural daylight into the heart of the home creates a brighter, more inviting living space throughout the day.

Walk-in robes and laundries

A small skylight means you can see without turning lights on every time, and a ventilator version handles moisture simultaneously.

Why Sunshine Coast Homeowners Trust Troy for Skylights

Skylight installation is one of those jobs where the quality of the install matters more than the product itself. A great skylight installed badly will leak within a year. Troy from Hinter Air has been installing skylights on the Sunshine Coast for 19 years and he does every job himself. He doesn't subcontract, he doesn't rush, and he doesn't cut corners on flashing and weatherproofing because he knows what the Sunshine Coast climate does to a lazy install.

He's ARC licensed (L137172), runs a lean operation with no overhead to pass onto you, and his reputation is built on getting it right the first time. When you call Troy, you get Troy. The same bloke who assesses your home is the one who installs the skylight, finishes the trim, and stands behind the work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Roof Ventilation on the Sunshine Coast

How much does a skylight cost to install on the Sunshine Coast?

Pricing depends on the type of skylight, the number of fixtures, your roof type, and ceiling height. Redilight solar skylights, Edmonds tube skylights, and Velux all have different price points. Troy gives you an exact price after the on-site assessment so there are no surprises.

Will a skylight make my house hotter?

Redilight solar skylights don't penetrate the roof at all, so there's zero heat gain or loss. They're IC4 rated and sit safely under your insulation. For traditional Edmonds tube skylights, modern UV-filtering glazing lets light through while blocking heat. Paired with good roof ventilation, a properly installed skylight won't add noticeable heat to your home.

Can you install a skylight in a tiled roof?

Yes. Redilight solar skylights work on any roof type since the solar panel sits on top without penetrating the roof structure. For Edmonds tube skylights, Troy installs in both tiled and metal roofs with the correct flashing kits to maintain waterproof integrity.

Do skylights leak?

Redilight solar skylights have no roof penetrations at all, so leaking isn't possible. For traditional Edmonds tube skylights, leaks almost always come down to poor installation. Troy installs every skylight to manufacturer specifications with full weatherproofing and stands behind his work.

Can you install a skylight in a flat ceiling with a pitched roof?

Yes, and this is actually the most common installation type on the Sunshine Coast. Troy builds a light shaft between the pitched roof and the flat ceiling to channel daylight down into the room. The shaft is lined and finished with a clean internal trim.

What's the difference between a skylight and a skylight ventilator?

A standard skylight lets natural light in through the roof. A skylight ventilator does the same thing but also uses wind-driven airflow to exhaust hot air and moisture from the room and roof space at the same time. If you're installing in a bathroom, laundry, or kitchen where moisture is a problem, the ventilator version is the better option.

What is a Redilight solar skylight?

Redilight is a solar-powered skylight alternative that uses a solar panel on your roof to power LED light fixtures in your ceiling. There are no roof penetrations, no leaks, and no heat loss. One solar panel can power multiple fixtures, making it perfect for multi-level homes or rooms where a traditional skylight can't reach. Available in round and square designs from 12W to 48W, with warm white or daylight colour options. The solar panel carries a 25-year warranty.

What's the difference between Redilight and a traditional skylight?

A traditional skylight like Edmonds cuts through the roof to channel daylight directly into the room. Redilight doesn't penetrate the roof at all. A solar panel on the roof converts sunlight to electricity and sends it via cable to LED fixtures in your ceiling. Redilight works in rooms where traditional skylights can't, such as multi-level homes, rooms not directly under the roof, or complex rooflines. It's also IC4 rated, so it sits safely under insulation with no heat gain or loss.

Can you install Velux skylights on the Sunshine Coast?

Yes. Troy supplies and installs Redilight, Edmonds, and Velux skylights. Velux offers opening skylights that are popular in bedrooms and living areas. Troy will recommend the right brand and model for your specific room and roof type.
